Shannon O’Neill is the founder of Alias Frequencies and is well known for his work in the group ‘Wake Up and Listen’ with Adrian Bertram as well as for his solo performances, radio work, writing and work as an organiser/curator in Sydney. His piece ‘Heaven Tonight’ was originally performed at a Radio National live-to-air event organised and curated by myself, entitled ‘Finding The Signal In The Noise’. Representing a stylistic departure from O’Neill’s recent work, it is nonetheless discernibly ‘oneillian’ and is dedicated to his close friend Charles who sadly passed away.

Both Jim Denley and Peter Blamey are well established members of the experimental and improvised music in Australia, known for solo work as well as their work as improvisors. One of the legendary ‘22 Contemporary Australian Composers’, Denley has been a part of numerous seminal ensembles, including Machine For Making Sense and The Splinter Orchestra. Also he is acutely engaged with electronic music and the challenges of improvising with electronics as an acoustic player. Meanwhile, Blamey has developed a unique process for improvising with a no-input mixing setup, emphasizing the autonomy of the system he has constructed. ‘Findings’, released last year, is the result of an extensive history of improvisation and exploration between the two players, producing one of the most exciting records I have head in a long time, in which their sounds coagulate together as one, often indiscernible, mass of sound.

Now based in Berlin, Clayton Thomas was the founder of the NowNow festival of improvised music, which has been instrumental in developing audiences for experimental and improvised music in Sydney as well as encouraging collaboration between electronic and acoustic musicians. In his own music Clayton Thomas strives for a focus and intensity of sound that can only be described as ‘tough’. Pushing his double bass to the point of collapse, he has developed a uniquely full and resonant yet terse and discrete sound. Currently working on his debut solo album, the track included here comes from a found/lost recording sessions from some year’s ago, shortly to be release by Alias Frequencies.

Ivan Lisyak is now perhaps best known as the drummer for up and coming indie darlings Belles Will Ring, however he is an accomplished electronic musician and AV artist in his own right. Part of the ‘U-Dubs Crew of young artists who have emerged from the University of Western Sydney’s Electronic Arts program in recent years, his solo work is as epic and consuming as it is varied. Equally at home producing cheesy techno, apocalyptic noise, drone or nigh anything else, he is one of the most naturally musical people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Taken from one of several EPs he has forthcoming on Alias Frequencies, ‘The Beginning Of The End’ is the first track of Mr. Lisyak’s I ever had the pleasure of hearing.

John Watermann remains one of the most elusive and mysterious figures in Australian electronic music. A german ex-partriote who, after a remarkable life, eventually settled in Brisbane and began composing electronic music in the late eighties, when in his fifties. Releasing most of his music on his own label, Night Shift, in runs of no more than fifty, he remains almost completely unrecognized as the pioneer and innovator he clearly was within the landscape of Australian electronic music at the time. Sadly, he passed away several years ago, however following his death his music is finally gaining some attention with numerous re-releases of his work overseas and plans to re-release his entire back catalog through Alias Frequencies. Included here is the track ‘RAM Slot’, a personal favourite from one of his early cassettes.

Another of the ‘22 Contemporary Australian Composers’, Rik Rue began composing his own soundscapes at age 15 and since has developed unique voice, mixing field recordings with tape and mini-disc cut ups and manipulations. He is well known for his solo work as well as his work in seminal groups such as Mind/Body/Split, Machine For Making Sense and Social Interiors. Originally released on the now defunct label Cosmic Conspiracy, the track ‘Yes I’m There’ is taken from his solo record ‘Heavy Handed’, soon to be re-released on Alias Frequencies.

Natasha Anderson is a Melbourne based musician/installation artist performing with a unique combination of contrabass recorder and electronics. Released last year, the track ‘Hindsight Refracted’ is taken from her album ‘Spore’, one of the outstanding records released by an Australian artist in recent times. Mixing the gestural and dynamic specificity of voice and recorder with the textural complexity of electronic processing using Max/MSP, Anderson has developed a unique and engaging musical language.

After many years performing and releasing as Autoclave, Alex White has gradually developed a solo practice that incorporates his ‘hardcore’ history while transitioning into a more overt focus on sound itself, and in particular the sounds of outdated technology failing, fracturing, saturating and being generally mistreated. He has an upcoming solo release on Alias Frequencies, which will include this track, ‘Going To Town On You’. Brutal.
