Wake Up and Listen - Thoughts Flash

Wake Up and Listen - Thoughts Flash

Thoughts Flash comprises two hallucinatory tracks from Wake Up and Listen’s ill-fated debut album. Recorded in the late 1990s but never released, the album featured a number of studio recordings, as well as edited excerpts from WUAL’s long-running radio show on 2MBS-FM. The technique of condensing extended radio improvisations into relatively short pieces, as on these two tracks, suggested a fruitful direction for the duo, however Bertram and O’Neill spent the following years focusing on other projects, with WUAL continuing primarily as a live act (their 2001 mini-album Mustard Keanu notwithstanding). WUAL’s recorded archives are nevertheless extensive, and it is likely that more material will be published on their website as well as on future Alias Frequencies releases.

Hinterlandt - New Belief System

Hinterlandt - New Belief SystemWhile a lot of experimental music seems to maintain an exclusive approach (stay out you wouldnt understand), the music of Hinterlandt is meant to be an invitation to anybody (come in – join the trip). While pop music gets more and more geared towards the ever-decreasing attention span of young listeners (which has shrunk from 2-minute radio songs to 30-second mp3 snippets), Hinterlandt warmly offers the format of 10-15-minute compositions.

Life is diverse and so is this record. The music on New Belief System does not stay in the same place for too long, it moves on. Like on a journey, the listener can witness a great number of different shapes and colours – strange things and familiar things, known sounds and unknown sounds, common harmonies and disturbing noises, nice melodies and distorted crackles. There are fairly detailed, pointy bits as well as lush ambiences, merging into each other, replacing each other; and as they appear and disappear you may give up on following and just sit back and see it as what it is: music.

“Electronic music is often interesting but sometimes feels a bit chilly.
When writing New Belief System, I tried to make a record that listeners can connect to on an emotional level as much as intellectually. says Jochen Gutsch aka Hinterlandt, who has just moved back to Germany after spending some years in Australia. Having enjoyed a classical trumpet education as a child, he played guitar in many underground rock bands before forming Hinterlandt in 2002. This could be the reason why he relies mostly on recording live instruments for his compositions rather than using samples and plug-ins like many of his peers in electronic music.

As the world chewed their fingernails over the possible existence of weapons of mass destruction the League continued to focus on the very real existence of weapons of media distortion.
